Our Process

Warping

Warping

We only use the highest quality and finest cashmere fibres from nomadic farms in Mongolia. Each and every thread in a cashmere has a purpose and is important for the structure, thickness and texture of the final product. Each thread is carefully and diligently positioned to create a set of lengthwise threads. The number of threads is decided per square inch and the cones of yarn are setup on racks to be rolled up over a drum for the required length of yarn. The width of the warp is setup based on the output of the fabric required.
Drafting

Drafting

Every fine thread of cashmere yarn must be manipulated again. Each thread is passed through heddles on different frames in an order. This step requires patience and care from the most experienced weavers to be completed. This allows for creation of weave to obtain different weave structures. This process of setting up the warp threads through the heddles is known as drafting. It is during the drafting process that the weave pattern is set up.
Weaving

Weaving

Weaving is a craft in which two distinct sets of yarns are interlaced to form a fabric. We at Shangrila cashmere use traditional hand looms dating back to the 12th century. Hand weaving requires precise coordination and timing. Our weavers have more than 20 years of experience in this craft. The threads which run length ways are called the warp and the threads which run across from side to side are the weft. Fabric is woven on a loom, while weft threads are woven through them. The way the warp and weft threads interlace with each other is called the weave. During this process individual threads are laced together and given life.
